Walter Pestana

Walter is the sportsman definition: trying basketball, football or hockey in the past, he dedicated his life to box and now he is teaching the new generation not only how to be better athletes, but also better humans.

Who is Walter?

So, my name is Walter Pestana. I was born in Angola and I’ve been living in Faro since 1980. During my life, I tried a lot of different sports like basketball, football, hockey. I even played football in the first division. However, I always had this thing for martial arts and combat sports. It’s in my blood.

What would you like to do when you grow up?

I was born in a sportive environment. Since I was a kid I was always connected to sport. Besides this area, I’m really interested in medicine. So, because of that, I studied a lot about the human body and how to keep it healthy through proper nutrition. Because, in the end, there is a big connection between the human body and sports. So, to answer the question, what I do right now is my dream job.

What is the first thing on your mind when you think about Faro?

For me, the climate and the people from Faro are very similar to Angola, the place I was born in. So, it gives me a feeling of home.

What would be the soundtrack of your life story?

Haha, to be honest, my mind is focused more on sports than music. But, because of my African roots, I really enjoy listening to African music. However, I like classical music too.

What is the place in Faro you are most connected to? Why?

When I think of Faro, I think of my workplace: Arena Faro. This place is my life. Here, we teach kids as young as 3. We like to think that here, through sports, we also educate people to be better human beings. It gives me a lot of happiness to see someone all the way from being a 3 year old that trains here to finishing their studies and then becoming an adult that’s integrated in the society. To see them grow into good people. It’s not all about sports, it’s also about integrating people in society.
