Vera Pinheiro

Thinking about her life journey, Vera Pinheiro remembers her “first entrepreneurial act“ at the age of 8 or 9. She considers herself to be a dynamic and creative person and thinks about the pier as the place in Faro she is most connected to.

Who is Vera?

I was born in Porto and lived my childhood and adolescence in a small village called Paços de Brandão in the north of Portugal. It was a quiet place but with a lot of cultural dynamics. There was a music academy where I studied, an ethnographic group that in the 1980s organized a large international event, a parish hall with theater and dance, a youth association that offered activities to the community, cinema, a large carnival event organized by the community and then there were still several sports. I consider that I was always dynamic and creative and I think that my first entrepreneurial act was when I was 8 or 9 years old when I decided to create a stand at the door with fruit and vegetables from the garden and another one with bracelets. I have always enjoyed traveling and whenever I can I want to go there.

Later I came to study at the University of Faro for the Education and Community Intervention course, I ended up with a monograph dedicated to Traditional Music as a community promotion – the example of the parish of Alte, and from then on I was always trying to bring together the different artistic areas that I they were captivating and in which I also acquired training and tried to use them as tools in my work. Intervention through art, the production of events and the community have always captivated me.

So I have been in the Algarve for 26 years, here I work and develop projects that give me pleasure, such as the Sardine Paper and a cultural event with the students of the school where I teach under the name “Menina estás à Janela”

I’m the mother of a boy from Faro, I’m creative, hardworking and I can’t turn off the button but I’m happy. I’m a good companion for a laugh.

What would you like to do when you grow up?

When I grow up I want to be enjoying the smiles of my family and friends, and live between trips, beach and countryside. It would be perfect.

What is the first thing on your mind when you think about Faro?

The first thing I think about Faro is the university that received me and integrated me into the city, then naturally I think about the hot nights and the flip-flops on my feet.

What would be the soundtrack of your life story?

The pier where the boat is taken to the islands, because it was a meeting point within the city to enjoy the sunset, and the island of Faro more precisely the barrinha to be between the river, the sea and the sky.
