Knox

Knox’s journey started with him buying a train ticket for a 1 month trip, which led him to 20 cities in 15 countries all over Europe. He’s connected to Ilha de Farol and would like to live his life with a Tarantino soundtrack in the background.

Who is Knox?

So, my name is Knox, I’m 34 years old. I was born in Faro, with the goal of Farense. At the exact moment my mom was giving birth to me, the team was scoring in the stadium near the hospital. Everyone in the hospital was so happy and the doctor made my mom associate the moment of my birth with Farense’s goal. After that, I had a pretty normal childhood.

I studied IT in high school, and then tourism in university. But after 3 months, I quit and I started to travel. My first trip was on the interrail. Basically, I just bought a ticket and for 1 month I was able to get on the trains all over Europe. 15 countries and 20 cities! It’s a pretty crazy experience! Every year, I work a lot over summer, and then I quit and go traveling.

Until now, this was kind of a routine for me. Work over summer, quit, go travel, and then repeat it all over again. Here, you have a lot of work during summer time. During winter time, not that much. Also, the flights are cheap in the winter. And now, for the first time in 15 years, I will not travel because of the coronavirus. But also, for the first time in my life, I don’t have this urge to run, to find myself or to travel, because I’m working in ARCM on a project that I’m really passionate about. Now I want to be here and for the first time in my life, I don’t want to run away to find something else. It’s like I finally found myself! Haha, thank you Covid!

What would you like to do when you grow up?

I remember that when I was really young, I used to spend a lot of time with my grandfather. He was retired already. So, when people were asking me what I want to be when I grow up, I was replying that I want to be retired like my grandfather. But, obviously I’m not retired now. I found something that I want to do now and I’m passionate about it … about building this project. Basically, this place, ARCM, was created by this guy 30 years ago with the musicians association. We have a lot of rooms for bands to rehearse and now, with our new partner, we want to bring everything to the next level. To make things bigger and wilder!

What is the first thing on your mind when you think about Faro?

The beach, the ocean and people … my family. It’s my home. Obviously, it’s my home because I was born here, but it’s not only that. Sometimes you have places where you feel at home even though you were not born there. You feel connected to them. I have this feeling a bit in Berlin because I go there a lot, with friends. But here, in Faro, is where I feel most at home.

What would be the soundtrack of your life story?

Haha, a Tarantino soundtrack! But seriously now, maybe Queen – Under Pressure or Talking Hands – Road to Nowhere. I would choose those 2.

What is the place in Faro you are most connected to? Why?

So, that would be Ilha de Faro. It’s an island that belongs to Faro, and when I was little, my family had a house there, and we grew up there with all the family. All the summer, the vacation…with all the cousins, running around free on this island. No cars, no roads, no stress…just peace and happiness. It’s like the other home inside of my home. My safe place.
