João Viegas

João recommends himself as a film director, script writer, plastic artist, surfer and “somewhat of an antreprenuer“.

Who is João?

A regular guy, natural of Faro, somewhat of an entrepreneur. Film director and scriptwriter plus a plastic artist and a surfer – last one triggered all the others. Despite not getting in the ocean as much as I´d like and love anymore, I can say that I’m a person who loves to float. Yes. Not swim, Float. Like when you feel the lack of gravity. Float, but not falling. A kind of flying but without the speed and the change of directions. Just floating in the air. I consider myself a floater. There’s something about that absence, the loss of control, the unavoidable and the now that, all combined, one can experience in the ocean. If you fight you’ll lose. If you otherwise float, then you continue. I want to continue.

What would you like to do when you grow up?

Read, write, paint, surf and film plus travel (mostly the things I already do but without the “need” to do it.)

What is the first thing on your mind when you think about Faro?

Home! The old city of Faro and Faro beach, ” Praia de Faro”.

What would be the soundtrack of your life story?

Right now – Koyaanisqatsi – Philip Glass, plus the Doors, always.

What is the place in Faro you are most connected to? Why?

Faro beach. Because there, time doesn’t pass by. When I´m there everything is the same. Like it was since I remember seeing, that sense of infinite for the first time. There’s something about that place that is recurrent, like a constant, never changing and perpetual. One can question the inevitability of death in such stillness.
